Contemporary Art in My Community

This photo is a mural painting found in the streets outside a psychiatric hospital in Davao City. Despite the eeriness and the condition of the institution, its gated walls are filled with colorful paintings such as this. Matters about mental health problems are addressed in a colorful and accepting way. Concerns about mental wellness are articulated through this painting and used the medium of contemporary art. Looking at the artwork, it poses questions about the stigma of mental health issues.

The people in the sculpture are seen to be playing music. Traditional musical instruments of Mindanao are displayed to convey an awareness of local heritage. This contemporary art is a birthright. It is very unique in its own style, however, people in the region are familiar of it because it addresses their heritage and locality.

The sculpture depicts two women on their knees trying to lift another woman up. This contemporary art shows a representation of how women should help other women uplift themselves rather than drag them down. It addresses gender issues and poses questions for people to ponder.

This sculpture depicts the life of an ordinary Filipino Farmer who toils every day under the heat of the sun. The farmer is with his trusty carabao who aids him in the fields. It is contemporary art as even in the present, this picture is the reality of a majority of Filipinos.

This sculpture depicts fishermen. Fishing, aside from agriculture is one of the primary livelihood of ordinary Filipinos. As the Philippines is an archipelago, we have a vast resource of aquatic creatures. This contemporary art showcases the culture of Filipinos and how we use our resources for our livelihood.
